Show Preview
Round 21 of the NRL premiership commences tonight when the Sydney Roosters host the Brisbane Broncos at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:50pm (AEST).
With semi-finals just around the corner, these top-eight clashes are pivotal in determining where teams finish. For the eighth-placed Roosters especially, a loss here puts their semi-final place in jeopardy.
The Tri-colours will be seeking their fourth victory on the trot tonight, although the Broncos will be their sternest test in the last month.
The 20-10 result against an understrength Sea Eagles was a little underwhelming, with the Roosters putting their cue in the rack before the second half started. Having said that, the combination between Sam Walker and Luke Keary continues to build well.
In team changes, Lindsay Collins is out with concussion protocols and Egan Butcher is suspended.
Matt Lodge will start at prop, with Terrell May and Ben Thomas both joining the bench.
The Broncos’ finals push hit a snag last weekend, with a shock 32-18 loss at home to the Tigers. Although a top-eight finish is not currently under threat, their spot in the top four definitely is. It’s a big game for both teams.
It has been said all season, but Adam Reynolds has transformed this Broncos unit. Behind an ever-improving pack, Reynolds’ astute decision-making has made their young backline very dangerous. As finals near though, his role arguably becomes even more important.
In a big blow, Patrick Carrigan has been suspended for four weeks, with Kobe Hetherington taking his place. Selwyn Cobbo returns on the wing after recovering from an Origin concussion.
Jake Turpin comes on to the bench for Cory Paix, with Rhys Kennedy getting the other bench spot.
Prediction
The Roosters have a tough run home and a lot of pundits are tipping they will miss the eight.
There’s no better way to dispel those doubts than by beating another top-eight team, and the Broncos fit that bill.
At home, they should get the job done.
