Match result:

The Sydney Roosters have won their seventh game on the trot as they continue to prime for the finals, ending the Penrith Panthers season in the process as they picked up a 16-point victory.

The tri-colours were a little slow to start, letting in the opening try, but they got themselves together shortly afterwards and ran away with the contest, defending strongly across the entire match as they held Penrith to just one try.

The Roosters weren’t perfect, but with three big names watching on from the sidelines in Boyd Cordner, Cooper Cronk and Jake Friend, their performance across the last hour of the game was a good one as they got back to basics.

The tri-colours are now destined to finish second on the ladder, while Penrith are out of the running to make the top eight with tonight’s result.

The Sydney Roosters will look to keep their Sydney Cricket Ground fortress intact on Saturday evening as they host the inconsistent Penrith Panthers, who must win to stay in the finals race. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7:35pm (AEST).

The Roosters have had something of an incredible run at the Cricket Ground, where opposition teams often struggle to adapt to the non-rectangular dimensions of the venue.

The tri-colours haven’t lost at their temporary home since they fell to the Rabbitohs there in Round 1, but even more impressively, hold an average winning margin of 32 points per game across their last seven victories.

They have been impressive, to say the least, and given the form they have been in, it’s hard to see them not going deep into September at this stage.

Trent Robinson’s side have had a simple, but entirely effective formula, which involves dominating the game up the middle and relying on Luke Keary, Cooper Cronk, and possibly the best player in the game, James Tedesco, to go to work.

They have also had some big games recently, which included a huge win in Canberra just three weeks ago.

The Pathers, on the other hand, come into this Round 24 game out of sorts and in a must-win position.

Following the Broncos win last night, a loss today ends their finals push more or less on the spot, barring a minor mathematical miracle in the final round of competition.

While the men from the foot of the mountains went on a strong run of victories through the middle of the season, they haven’t been able to hold a candle to that form recently.

Losing four of their last five, Penrith have gone right off the boil, struggling in the middle third of the park and making a mountain of sloppy errors.

Taking that sort of game to the home of the Roosters is going to end badly – very badly.

Prediction
As much as neutral fans would like to see Penrith win to keep the finals race interesting, they aren’t getting over the line here. The Roosters should keep rolling.

Roosters by 24.
