Another chapter will be added to rugby league’s oldest rivalry on Saturday night when the Sydney Roosters and South Sydney Rabbitohs battle it out for a spot in the 2018 NRL Grand Final. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, starting at 7:40pm (AEST).

The Roosters head into Saturday night’s game refreshed after earning the week off a fortnight ago when they took down the Sharks 21-12.

Not everything has gone to plan though, with both Latrell Mitchell and Dylan Napa forced to sit out the preliminary final through suspension.

Mitchell Aubusson replaces Mitchell in the centres while Jared Waerea-Hargreaves and Siosiua Taukeiaho start in the front row.

Making it to the third week of the finals hasn’t been an issue for the Tricolours in recent years, having qualified four times in the past five years.

What is concerning for coach Trent Robinson, however, is that during that period they have only progressed to the big dance once, in 2013.

It’s why premiership-winning halfback Cooper Cronk was brought to Sydney and he proved his worth in the win over Cronulla.

Now he faces his greatest challenge yet and anything other than victory will be considered a massive failure.

They will be taking on a South Sydney outfit who are without veteran Jason Clark, who was ruled out yesterday with an ankle injury.

Clark, who is jetting off to England at the end of the season, has played all 169 of his first-grade games at the Rabbitohs and his teammates will be desperate to give him one final chance to play in the cardinal and myrtle one more time.

The Rabbitohs progressed through to this week’s preliminary final off the back of a tense 13-12 win over the Dragons.

Their usually potent left edge struggled to spark anything in attack and this week, against the best defensive unit in the competition, South Sydney will need to rediscover the form that saw them surge towards the top of the ladder.

Prediction
In a bruising encounter up front, it will be the class and composure of Cronk that will guide the Roosters to their first grand-final appearance since 2013.

Roosters by four.
