Peta Hiku returns for the injury-ravaged New Zealand Warriors as they look to begin the post-Roger Tuivasa-Sheck era with a win over the Wests Tigers. Follow along with all the action from Brisbane here on The Roar with live scores from 6pm (AEST).
The loss of inspirational captain and 2018 Dally-M Medallist Tuivasa-Sheck is a major blow for the Warriors’ finals hopes, though it has been softened by the emergence of gun youngster Reece Walsh at fullback this year. Nevertheless, now sitting three games outside the eight, Nathan Brown’s men have probably run their race when it comes to September action.
The Tigers aren’t much higher in twelfth, but have an extra game on the Warriors; so tonight is a virtual elimination final. Michael Maguire’s team have won just once in a devilishly tricky last five weeks, but have a largely winnable run home to try and force their way into the eight. Losing here, though, would all but extinguish those hopes.
The Warriors can only name a 20-man squad for this clash due to a spate of injuries, including to Matt Lodge, Addin Fonua-Blake and Chad Townsend. Hiku is back to captain the side earlier than expected (and probably recommended) from shoulder surgery. Meanwhile at the Tigers, Alex Twal has been named to return from his own shoulder injury, while Joe Ofahengaue has been promoted to start at 13 in place of Thomas Mikaele.
