Gus Gould blasts the NRL, fears for the future of the game

One of the most well-known voices in rugby league has questioned the state and future of the game amid concerns surrounding safety and aggressive play.

Having seen Tevita Pangai Junior sent to the bin late in the Brisbane Broncos win over the Penrith Panthers for a crusher tackle, Wide World of Sports commentator Phil Gould believes intimidation and aggression are being taken out of the game.

“I’ve said doctors and lawyers will end the game within 20 years,” Gould said told the nine network after the match.

“That’s my fear.”

Gould says that any time the NRL has moved to outlaw an action or changed the rules, it has led to a new problem emerging.

He argues the NRL cannot prevent accidents from happening, and that the future of the sport is in jeopardy if the administration continues on its current path.
