It’s a clash of titans as the two most recent teams to hold the No.1 spot in the World Rugby Rankings, the All Blacks and Ireland, go head-to-head in a Rugby World Cup quarter-final. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog, starting from 9:15pm AEDT.
The New Zealanders are only three wins away from making it three consecutive Rugby World Cup titles, but their first hurdle to achieving that goal is against the side that has probably been most consistently able to trouble them in recent times, Ireland.
These two nations have only played three times since the 2015 Rugby World Cup, and Ireland have won two of those matches, including a 16-9 victory in Dublin last year.
However, that victory was arguably Ireland’s highest peak in the time between tournaments, and they haven’t been quite as dominant since, even losing a pools match to Japan in this tournament.
They only need to turn it one for one upset though and if they do, they’ll have knocked out the most powerful team in world rugby and changed instantly the nature of the 2019 world cup.
Prediction
12 of the Irish starting 15 beat the All Blacks in late 2018, and this time they’ve got Connor Murray too.
The Irish might wish they were playing this World Cup a year or 18 months ago but there’s something in the air with this one and we could in store for an upset.
Ireland to win by 3.
