Today’s opponents are both on losing streaks with no shortage of incentive for a win. For the Blues, a third straight defeat will end their slim hopes of a memorable Super Rugby Aotearoa title, while the Chiefs enter Round 7 as the only winless side in the competition. Having entered the season as second-favourites, it’s now win at all costs for Warren Gatland’s side, particularly after throwing away a 31-7 lead against the Highlanders last week.

With star signing Beauden Barrett still yet to show his best form in Auckland blue, coach Leon MacDonald has shifted him from fullback to first-five.

The two-time World Rugby Player of the Year spent more time at first receiver last week due to Otere Black’s injury and clearly enjoyed having the ball in his hands more often what had been the case in previous rounds. A repeat performance for the full 80 minutes would bode poorly for the Chiefs today.
