The Chiefs host the NSW Waratahs in the second of the Super Rugby Pacific quarter-finals. Join The Roar for live scores from 2:35pm AEST.

The Waratahs have gradually improved as the season has gone on, which is what this Super Rugby Pacific competition rewards. They are, of course, rank outsiders to win today but coach Darren Coleman has brought a discipline to the Tahs that have kept them in so many games this year.

It’s not just Coleman pulling the strings with Coleman’s assistants also getting praise for building the Tahs from a laughing stock to arguably the best Australian franchise (when you consider the Brumbies’ recent struggles).

Harry Johnson-Holmes makes a return from a knee injury suffered against the Crusaders in Round 11 and joins Angus Bell and Dave Porecki in the front row.

Tane Edmed, who re-signed with the Waratahs mid-week, continues to develop his partnership with Jake Gordon in the halves while Lalakai Foketi and Alex Newsome have been named in the centres.

“It’s great to have Harry back in the team, he was one of our strongest and consistent performers prior to his injury and adds a significant work rate on the field,” Coleman said.

“Langi was outstanding against the Highlanders and we’re looking for a similar impact from him off the bench, alongside Hugh Sinclair and Jeremy Williams.

“The six-two bench seems to be working for us, it gives us the ability to make some early tactical substitutions and the security if we pick up an injury late in the game.”

The Chiefs finished in third spot on the ladder and their lineup is just imposing to look at.

There is so much experience there even without co-captain Sam Cane who has a knee injury. If it stays dry in Hamilton expect a lot of expansive play.

“We need to enjoy the moment, there is a lot of blood, sweat, and tears gone into this jersey and we want to enjoy the fact we have earnt the right to be here” Head Coach Clayton McMillan said.

Prediction

Home ground advantage will once again be key in this one, with the Tahs certain to be brave and gutsy. But the location and consistent season of the Chiefs is likely to provide them with the victory they seek and a spot in the semi-finals next weekend.

Chiefs by 11 points.
