There are still three weeks to go after this one, but with a win today the Crusaders will just about wrap up the Super Rugby Aotearoa title. The Hurricanes, though, can tighten the race at the top of the ladder right up with an upset victory today – and they might be the only team capable of challenging the Saders at home.
While the Christchurch side have won all four of their matches to date, the Canes are the next-most in-form side in the competition, having won three straight including a crucial Round 6 encounter with the Blues. They also happen to be the last side to beat the Crusaders at Orangetheory Stadium… although that did happen more than four years ago.
There are plenty of notable injuries impacting this match. Hooker Dane Coles is out for the Hurricanes, while David Havili and Ethan Blackadder will miss the rest of the season for the hosts. Havili’s thumb injury at least frees up the fullback spot for Will Jordan, with his battle with Jordie Barrett looming as one of the many enticing match-ups in this one.
Today will be big winger Ben Lam’s final game in Hurricanes yellow before he departs to begin his stint in French rugby.
