Match preview:

The Crusaders will welcome the Jaguares to Christchurch for the Super Rugby Final as both teams look to make history. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage of what promises to be a thrilling decider from 5:35pm (AEST).

If the Crusaders win then they become the first team to ever claim three titles in a row. If the Jaguares take the trophy then it will be their first after entering the competition four years ago.

So we’re finally here. The final and it’s a combination of the predictable and the fairy tale surprise. Way back in February, when Round 1 kicked off the 2019 competition, there were plenty of people predicting the Crusaders would make another final but there weren’t many who expected the Jaguares to make it this far.

Now, it’s easy to say that the Crusaders are the firm favourites and the stats are certainly on their side. They’re unbeaten at home in their past 23 playoff games and have won their past 30 games at home as well.

There is a precedent for teams who have to travel overseas for the final winning the big one – it’s been done twice before. Unfortunately for the Jaguares, the only team to achieve this feat was ironically the Crusaders.

So no need to watch really is there? Well, accept that maybe there is, because this Jaguares side have something about them and maybe, just maybe the stars are beginning to align in their favour.

From a selection point of view, the Jaguares have managed to strengthen their team for this match. Nahuel Tetaz Chaparro, Ramiro Moyano and Marcos Kremer have all returned to the starting line up and with them, they bring over 100 international Test caps. That’s the kind of experience you want in the biggest game of the season.

On the flip side, the Crusaders are missing two very key players – Scott Barrett and Ryan Crotty are both injured and will, unfortunately, miss the climax of the season they’ve both worked so hard for. Crotty is a big loss for the Crusaders especially considering he is key for organising their defence.

Add to this the fact that while the Jaguaess haven’t played the Crusaders this year, the Argentine side have won five of their last seven games in Australia and New Zealand. That usual trepidation of travelling for Super Rugby sides doesn’t seem to be part of the Jaguares’ make up this season.

There are some great match-ups all over the park but one of the most enthralling will be to see the two fly halves go head to head. Last week Richie Mo’unga arguably won the battle against All Blacks’ first choice Beauden Barrett. It will be exciting to see this week Mo’unga go up against Joaquin Diaz Bonilla who has been in great form this season and especially in the knockout stages.

Prediction
In one game anything can happen and it does feel like if anyone can beat the Crusaders, it’s the Jaguares right now.

However, the Jags need everything go right for 80 minutes. The Crusaders have been guilty recently of not killing off teams and if they give the Jags a sniff then who knows what might happen.

In the end though, it’s impossible to bet against the Crusaders at home in a pressure game that they know all too much about.

Crusaders by 10.

Thanks Nobes, and hard luck, was a very hard fought battle and Jags were always threatening. On another night where the balls stay in hand, could have been different. One thi g for sure though, the Jags have figured out what they are about and how to make this SR gig work for them. Be very interesting to see if Los Pumas can carry on the form in the RC... and beyond...

Just goes to show its not always how much ball you have, but what you do with it that counts. Jags were excellent, but Crusaders took their chances.

Matera is a fair winner, he was enormous. Would have been happy to see it go to Todd or Mo'unga as well. The difference between the two 10's was the biggest difference in any single position tonight.

I thought the Crusaders got away with being offside more than a few times Marlin. Having said that, they were the better team and took the points on offer, so the point about getting away with some offside positioning doesn't take away from the fact that the Crusaders made less mistakes and defended better to keep the Jags to 3 points. Commiserations mate from Oz.

I was at the game and sat next to a few of the South American fans and none of us apparently watched the game you saw??

Ok, good idea mate. I have a few seasons of juniors to my name so I should be able to sign up and get a gig. I couldn’t be much worse than most of them. I think TMO would be my spot, have 6 looks and still let them be offside? Your ? button is still stuck or you have issues with comprehension mate

Fair enough i suppose but am i also wrong in my perception that the red team were offside all game and got 1 penalty against? I admit i was a bit rattled by the end so may have ckosed 1 eye but the other one was open. Maybe I should blame the touchies or do you reckon they Weren’t offside?

As the former Spain national team coach Luis Aragones said: You don’t play finals, you win them. Saders know how to win and they showed that tonight. Again. Congrats to all Saders fans and players. You are still the pinnacle and I hope you all thoroughly enjoy this and party hard until early morning.

I am no fan of Peyper, but he actually had a great game. When you hardly notice a ref for 80 minutes, that is usually the best sign one can get that the ref has got pretty much everything right.

In that second half last week the Canes were the better side and had the Crusaders in real trouble. While the Crusaders had to work incredibly hard tonight against the Jags, I reckon that the Canes were the ones who could genuinely threaten the Crusaders.

Be so your keyboard seems to be stuck mate. Just because some teams are allowed to be offside all the time doesn't mean it's appropriate to hold down the ? all the time

Hard luck, Nobes, Carlos and the legions of other Jaguares fans. Your team did you proud. Will be some sore Crusaders bodies tonight and a good job they won’t play for the ABs first up. To the Crusaders, a proud performance. The Jaguares were resolute on defence but so too were the Crusaders. Whitelock calm under pressure and took the points on offer. Richie Mo’unga on fire with the boot at the moment. That’s what you need in finals footy. Amazing record. Take a bow, Razor. To win three in a row when you’re a marked team is incredibly difficult. They weren’t convincing all the way through but in the games that mattered they fronted and won.

I am wondering what the Hurricanes are thinking about now? As good as Jaguares are, and as difficult as they made it for the Crusaders in this final, remember it was the Hurricanes who had the 2nd best overall record behind the Crusaders and then look how much of a fright they gave them last weekend in the semifinals.

Yes we are a bit unlucky, we also only have Beauden Barrett who goes Ok and the young Aucklander Josh Ioane who signed with the Highlanders and he goes Ok too as a apprentice. I’m being a bit facetious of course but ‘our cup runneth over at the moment’ with flyhalves
