The Wallabies are in Dublin for the fourth match of the Spring Tour where they take on world No.1 Ireland. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7am (AEDT).
After the disappointment of last week’s loss against Italy, Wallabies coach Dave Rennie has brought back a stack of experience as they look to get their tour back on track. There are 10 changes to the starting side this week and the Wallbies are coming up against an Irish side full of confidence after claiming wins in the Autumn Nations Series over South Africa and Fiji.
Mark Nawaqanitawase gets another crack on the right wing, albeit with another fullback alongside him with Andrew Kellaway getting the nod this week, perhaps giving a clue towards the Wallabies game plan this week.
The halves pairing of Nic White and Bernard Foley will need to control the tempo in this match or they could see Jamison Gibson-Park and Johnny Sexton have a field day, with Gibson-Park’s running game a real threat against unsuspecting defenders.
The Wallabies’ discipline has been a real problem this tour and if they’re not careful, Sexton will run up the Irish scores in multiples of three and put the heat on the Wallabies.
The naming of Taniela Tupou and Will Skelton on the bench indicates Rennie is looking to finish with a big power game. Skelton has been difficult for Irish sides to contain in past years with strong games for Saracens and La Rochelle against Leinster in the Champions Cup fresh in their minds.
The Ireland win over Fiji was described in some circles as ‘flat’ compared to the first-up win over South Africa and coach Andy Farrell will no doubt be looking for a lift in intensity this week.
Most of the talk this week has been about Mack Hansen coming up against his country of birth but there are bigger threats the Wallabies will need to be wary of. The tight five battle is one that will be one to watch for scrum enthusiasts with the Irish pair of Andrew Porter and Tadhg Furlong in good form.
So, get the coffee ready on Sunday morning and let’s get behind the Wallabies this week!
