The Queensland Reds welcome the Wellington Hurricanes to the balmy surrounds of Townsville for their season opener on Saturday night. Join The Roar for live coverage from 7:30pm AEDT.

The name Lynagh and the number 10 jersey are synonymous with Queensland rugby and in a throwback to the 80’s and 90’s, the son of the legendary Michael Lyngah, Tom, makes his debut in the maroon jersey.

Brad Thorn’s team have looked impressive in their pre-season trials with plenty of points scored, and all without Taniela Tupou and James O’Connor who are injured. There are also injury concerns with the Reds locks that might have had Thorn thinking he might have to pack his boots and mouthguard.

Despite those injuries, the Reds backrow of Seru Uru, Fraser McReight and Harry Wilson have what it takes to match their counterparts, led by Ardie Savea.

The Reds backline looks strong on paper and hopefully the likes of Jordan Petaia can have a strong showing and impress Eddie Jones to lock down a permanent spot in the Wallabies.

The Hurricanes might be wondering what they got themselves in for as they swap temperatures in the high teens for low 30’s and high humidity. The inclusion of countdown clocks for set piece and kicks at goal in 2023 will certainly get a workout.

Dane Coles is in his last season before retirement, and he will no doubt be up to his usual tricks to get under the skin of his opponents. The Hurricanes are without their first choice flyhalves but with the likes of Jordie Barrett and Julian Savea in the backline they will pose a danger to the Reds. Barrett’s kicking game could prove vital in the final makeup and if he is given shots at goal, the Reds could be in for a long night.
