In what will be a historic day for Sydney club rugby, Randwick will host Argentina at the picturesque Coogee Oval in the lead-up to the Rugby World Cup. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 2:30pm (AEST).
The last time such an event came to Sydney was when the Galloping Greens hosted New Zealand way back in 1988, with the final result of that one ending in favour of the All Blacks 25 points to 9.
While a similar result could be expected again, there is plenty of young talent the home side have named for the game as they look to take the challenge to the powerful scrum and counter attack of the Pumas.
Even though the big storyline is about former duel international Andrew Walker, who will come off the bench for Randwick, their most experienced starting player is former Wallabies back rower Ned Hannigan, while eight of the remaining 14 in the side have played for their country either at junior level, or in sevens.
Will Harrison, who played for the under 20 Australian side in both 2018 and 2019 will be one to watch at fullback, while number eight Kyle Harris has been touted for big things in the New Zealand system.
Co-captain Mitch Short will line up alongside Ben Donaldson in the halves, with the duo also receiving plenty of good wraps, while winger Josh Gordon would love to have a chance to exploit his speed on the sideline.
However, Randwick must be able to match it in the scrums with Argentina if they want to have a chance in this game, with the visitors likely to play something resembling their best team.
Argentina coach Mario Ledesma has stated the Pumas knocked back a Test with a Pacific Island nation to play against Randwick, wanting an easier hit-out after a punishing year for Argentina’s top talent, with the Jaguares making it all the way to the Super Rugby final.
They have been in Australia for almost a fortnight, getting used to the time zone and conditions and with players like Tomas Cubelli, Matias Orlando, Emiliano Boffelli, it would be no surprise to see some entertaining, attacking rugby at Coogee.
Prediction
While neither team are probably going to be at their absolute best for this match, Argentina, who are playing close to a full strength side, would be extremely concerned if they can’t pick up a win.
Los Pumas by 12.
