While it’s very early days in this year’s Super Rugby competition, this is a vital clash for both sides. As an Australian derby, this is not only an opportunity for each team to acquire the 4 points – it’s a great chance to prevent a fellow Australian team from picking up points too.
The Rebels picked up a tight win 24-19 against an understrength Highlanders side last week, and played some scintillating rugby in the process.
Quade Cooper looked sharp in his first outing for the Rebels, kicking well and playing a significant role in a number of the Rebels’ tries.
In stark contrast, the Brumbies are coming off an absolute demolition job at the hands of the Hurricanes, losing 43-13.
They will certainly want to make amends for that loss and get their season back on track.
A win here against the Rebels will catapult them to the top spot in the Australian Conference – a valuable position to hold at any stage in the season.
All eyes will be on 21-year-old rugby league convert Tom Wright, who will be getting his first start in his Super Rugby career at inside centre.
Wright is a prodigious talent, and showed good pace and awareness as he picked up a consolation try for the Brumbies late in the game against the Hurricanes – with his first touch of the match no less.
For the Rebels, Marika Koroibete will be looking for a big game after having a fairly quiet one against the Highlanders.
After being bundled into touch on a number of occasions he will certainly want to improve on that performance – especially with so many Wallabies’ backline spots up for grabs.
Prediction
With the homeground advantage and coming off two wins on the trot, it’s hard not to see the Rebels coming away with the chocolates in this one.
Expect the Brumbies to improve on their poor performance against the Hurricanes, however the Rebels should just get them in a tight one.
