The Wallabies kick off the first of their five-Test Spring Tour against Scotland at Murrayfield on Sunday morning. Join The Roar for live scores and rolling coverage from 3:30am (AEDT).
Dave Rennie’s men had an unhappy tour to Europe last year when they were unable to come away with a win in their three matches. The corresponding fixture was close, but ultimately saw the Scots run out two-point winners and continue their winning streak over the Wallabies.
Rennie has made five changes from their last match against the All Blacks over a month ago; and welcomes Michael Hooper back into the starting side after his mental health absence, on what will be his 31st birthday.
Hunter Paisami is also back in the starting side at inside centre to give the midfield a familiar pairing alongside Len Ikitau; his left foot clearing kicks could be an important factor in this match.
Tom Banks has worked his way back into the Wallabies’ fold after a strong showing for Australia A in their series in Japan, following a broken arm suffered against England in July. His inclusion sees Andrew Kellaway join Tom Wright on the wings – that pair will be in for a busy game up against Duhan van der Merwe and Darcy Graham.
There has been much said about Jock Campbell in recent months, and he will be given a chance to make his Wallabies debut from the bench after a strong outing in the Japan XV series.
The Scottish squad named by Gregor Townsend as they chase a fourth consecutive win over the Wallabies has been overshadowed by the omission of Finn Russell, causing quite a stir.
Blair Kinghorn has been given the keys to the Scottish backline that includes former Melbourne Rebel Sione Tuipulotu at inside centre.
This match also sees a potential for former Wallaby Jack Dempsey from the bench. Dempsey has made the squad following changes to World Rugby’s eligibility requirements after debuting for the Wallabies in 2017. He then took his talents to Glasgow Warriors in 2021 and had not featured for the Wallabies since the 2019 World Cup.

I think it would be lucky to add an extra scrum on average per game. Even with a reduced offence nobody wants to give away an attacking scrum in their quarter... It's a last ditch effort to stop a try.

On the contrary, I consider scrums to be a defining point of Rugby and enjoy the contest, but at the moment I believe the game has enough scrums. To me to potentially double the number would be likely to kill Rugby as a spectacle.

Good excuse for me to pontificate my opinions.

If you have a problem with scrums you have a problem with Rugby.

I didn't think so, the question was a little tongue in cheek!!
Malotru
Roar Rookie
Exactly, and the sanction for a knock on is?? At around 2 mins a scrum an extra, say 10 scrums (arguably a low figure) would eat up another 20 mins of playing time. Fine if you enjoy watching scrum lotto.
Otago Man
Roar Rookie
No, but that was close to most boring game of the year from both sides with the error rate. The Wallabies vs All Blacks at Eden Park produced a worse Australian effort but at least we got something from the All Blacks in that game.

Roar Rookie
Why? It's still a knock on. Just not a penalty and yellow card.
Malotru
Roar Rookie
Do away with it and there would be even more penalties Doc. That's something to savour, not.

Make sure you save that comment Wallabies_Larkham, no doubt you'll be needing it again.

Is that your first Wallabies game Otago Man?

Lacks distance on all his kicks hmmm. Having watched a couple of games in the women's world cup there are some ladies who can kick the ball further than Foley.

Can't imagine Slipper would be anywhere near the top 5 tightheads in test Rugby BS.
Nick Maguire

Big effort, he looked pretty gassed towards the end

Not sure what foley brings aside from goal kicking. Tim Horan said “thats why rennie picks him”. His general kicking is not great. Lacks distance on penalty kicks , general kicks and goal line drop outs. The scott try in second half came from a clunky backline play - foley key to this. First try in first half was a defensive misread by foley. The backline attack was not smooth. Would prefer to see some time for noah or donaldson. Foley is definitely no quade cooper.

Yes, almost a certainty!

He did add some oomph overall though.

Wallabies would be better off with Campbell starting.

I don't know why but Pete Samu comes to mind. Guy just doesn't quit. Don't know what he's communication is like but I feel like a good captain has to be an amazing player first. Or at least not a penalty magnet.
