The Super Rugby season is reaching crunch time, and both the Stormers and Highlanders will put it all on the line as they clash in Cape Town. Join The Roar for live scores of the match, starting at 11:05pm (AEST).
Both sides are on the edge of playoff spots to qualify for the finals series coming into this clash, and with only three weeks of the season to go, desperation will be imminent from the first whistle until the final siren.
As it stands, the Stormers are in last spot on the South African conference, but of course, it means virtually nothing given how close it all is.
Points have started to spread out though, and a loss here would all but bring the Stormers finals hopes to a premature end.
Their form hasn’t been outstanding either, but then, like the rest of the South African conference, it’s consistency which has ruled the roost. They drew with the Crusaders last week though, proving exactly what this side can do when they get going, but have also fallen to the Jaguares and Brumbies in the last month.
The Highlanders, on the other hand, must win a wildcard spot if they want to make the finals, given the Crusaders have stormed to an insurmountable lead in the New Zealand conference.
They are clinging on to the top eight at the moment, but have the advantage of returning home to finish their season after this week with a bye in between for the travel.
That, in some ways, serves as a disadvantage, giving them one less game than other teams to rack up points and try to make the finals, so after losing to the Lions last week, it makes this game all the more important to close their South African tour on a high.
To do that, it’ll all come down to their defensive effort and intensity, which has often been the Stormers undoing. They seem to go just fine, until a team puts the hammer down against them in defence.
Prediction
The Stormers haven’t been in great form, but they, like the entire South African conference, have been inconsistent. With home ground advantage and being due for a win, they should get the job done in a close encounter.
