After an awful start to the 2019 Super Rugby season, the task for the Stormers won’t get any easier as they return home to play the highly-favoured Lions in Round 2. Join The Roar for live scores of the match, starting from 2:15am (AEDT).
The Stormers would have been full of positivity before last weekend about the upcoming season, but that lies in tatters right at the moment.
They might have been away from home, but their defence was a leaky ship throughout the 80 minutes as the Bulls ran up a 40-3 drubbing, in a game they dominated from the opening minute to the final minute.
The Stormers, if anything, appear to have gone backwards in 2019, but that was only one round and they need to make a statement about exactly where the club is sitting moving into the rest of the season.
The Lions, on the other hand, were a long way from their best on a tough road trip to start the season.
Taking on the always cagey Jaguares in Buenos Aires, the Lions came away with the chocolates after some tense moments as they battled the strength in the Jaguares forward pack.
In the end, they ended up only a try away from the bonus point, not able to get the job done in the closing minutes, but they were scrappy and will take plenty from the match.
Silly errors and bad discipline led to the Jaguares finding their way back into the match time and time again, but their defence was a testament to a team who have made two straight grand finals, and if that keeps up once again, the Stormers are likely to be overwhelmed with the ball in hand and make plenty of silly errors throughout.
Prediction
This is going to be one-way traffic unfortunately for the Stormers. They were mauled last week, and the same thing will happen this time with the Lions set to take plenty of lessons from their opening scrappy win over the Jaguares in Argentina.
