The Stormers will aim to battle their way off the bottom of the South African conference in what is all but a dead rubber when they take on the Sunwolves in Cape Town during Week 18 of Super Rugby. Join The Roar for live scores of this match from 1:15am (AEST).

The Stormers sit stone motherless in the South African conference, and they are already three points behind the Sharks, who, as it stands, are holding onto the last wildcard finals spot.

For that reason, the fate of the Stormers is completely out of their own hands, even if they do manage to pick up a win here over the Sunwolves, who are bringing their second last season in the competition to a close with some more promising signs.

The topsy-turvy South African conference has been close all year, and, tied in with the others, it’s hardly a surprise to be talking mathematics with two weeks to go, but the Stormers essentially must look after their end of the bargain, and try not to worry about what else needs to go right.

They have been their own worst enemy recently, picking up just one win and a draw from their last four games, squandering opportunity after opportunity to stay in check with the upper echelons of the top half of their concerence and a wildcard spot in the finals.

Instead, they lost to the Lions by 19 points last week, fell to the Jaguares by five and managed to find a way to not beat the Crusaders.

The Sunowlves should present an easier sort of challenge though. While the Japanese had shown some more positive signs earlier in the year, they have been aboslutely belted in four of their last five.

The only time in those five weeks they looked remotely competitive was against the Reds, while they have lost 52-0 to the Highlanders, 52-7 to the Rebels and both 33-0 and 42-19 to the Brumbies home and away.

It’s been a woeful stretch for the Japanese outfit, and heading to South Africa isn’t exactly going to help them out, so this could get pretty ugly, even if they can muscle up in the forwards.

Prediction
The Stormers are at home. The Sunwolves seldom win away. This will be one-sided as the Stormers desperately try to cling onto their Super Rugby season before it slips away for good.

Stormers by 26.
