It’s do-or-die time for the Western Force when they host the ladder-leading Queensland Reds in Perth tonight. Join The Roar for live scores of this crucial Super Rugby AU clash from 7:45pm (AEST).
The scenario for the Force in Round 10 is simple: win, and they seal for themselves a place in the finals. Lose, and they must rely on the winless Waratahs to beat the Rebels tomorrow night if they’re to play in the post-season.
The problem there is the opposition they’re faced with. The Reds have had a home final locked up for some time now, and are indeed undefeated through the seven games they’ve played so far. The prospect of a perfect season is drawing nearer, and Brad Thorn has named close to a full-strength side for tonight given he has the luxury of a week off next week.
Captain Liam Wright comes into the run-on XV for his first start of 2021 after a syndesmosis injury sidelined him before the season proper had even begun. That means a reunion of the back-row trio which was so effective in last year’s run to the final, with Wright at blindside, Fraser McReight at openside and Harry Wilson at number eight.
Angus Scott-Young has been pushed up the pack into the second row, giving the Reds an incredibly mobile group of forwards, five of which are capable of playing in the loose.
Even better for Queensland is Hunter Paisami’s return at outside centre, although rapid fullback/winger Jock Campbell is out with a minor groin injury.
Speaking of fullbacks, the Force will benefit tonight from having Rob Kearney available once again. The Irishman hasn’t played since the first half of the season, his last appearance coming in the Westerners’ narrow defeat to today’s opponents in Brisbane, and comes straight back into the 15 jersey.
Winger Toni Pulu also returns to the line-up, meaning Richard Kahui has to settle for a spot on the bench, while there’s a rare start for prop Greg Holmes against his former side.
