Springboks controversially denied try just before halftime

By The Roar / Editor

A brave call came right before the break from referee Wayne Barnes without needing the TMO.

However despite criticism of the decision, to the letter of the law, Barnes’ call may have been the right one, as Springbok Damian de Allende appeared to have been held while his knees were on the ground and he didn’t release the ball.

This was the only Barnes call that I thought was just pedantic. He used to be more that way. I think he’s improved.

Lots to like about Barnes’ officiating, but this didn’t look like his greatest moment. De Allende was at best tripped by first contact, and at no point was held. You have to go to the TMO when a try is in question.
