Round 2 of the A-League kicks off on Friday night at Cooper’s Stadium, with Adelaide United taking on the Newcastle Jets at 7:50pm (AEDT). Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match.

Round 1 brought unexpected outcomes for both teams. Adelaide will be bitterly disappointed to miss all 3 points against a surprisingly listless Sydney FC. A classy team build up and a neat finish from Sydney’s Adam LeFondre cancelled out Scott Galloway’s brilliant lobbed goal to rescue a point for Sydney on the night.

The Jets – last year’s grand finalists – went down 2-1 to underdogs Wellington Phoenix in NZ, despite having more of the ball (60 per cent), more shots (16-11) and more shots on target (6-3).

The Jets may feel as aggrieved as Adelaide to have dropped points in Round 1, but their lack of polish up front – and Filip Kurto’s goalkeeping – prevented them from finishing off their better moves.

Socceroo Dimi Petratos was busy, while newcomer and debutant Jair spurned their best chance early on.

Starting with journeyman Jason Hoffman as a lone striker, Newcastle will need their midfielders to supply goals – which they were unable to do in Wellington before Petratos claimed an injury-time consolation.

It would be easy to point to Roy O’Donovan’s absence as the problem for the Jets (or their god-awful flesh-toned shorts), but they found ways to win last season without the Irishman. With Brazilian Jair on debut and Venezuelan Ronny Vargas still building match strength in his broken leg, the goals should come in time.

Adelaide United get their second consecutive home game on a Friday night, and will be hoping to improve on the 10,018 attendance from last week.

Certainly, if word is out about their team’s exciting start to the season, more locals should turn up. Adelaide’s press really worried Sydney FC, and their quick and energetic trident of Ryan Strain, Craig Goodwin and Ben Halloran made life hell for Sydney’s back 4.

Isaias controlled the tempo in midfield and it was only after Adelaide began to tire that Sydney could get back into the game.

Given the high tempo and energetic forward play of both teams this could be a goal fest, and both defences will need to hold on tight to prevent a cricket score. Both teams have a lot of defensive experience but expect the team who controls the ball in midfield best to come out on top.

Prediction
This could be a high scorer, especially if Petratos, Jair and Vargas can find value in front of goal. Adelaide will be tempted to bring in a number 9 – either Baba Diawara or George Blackwood – but Marco Kurz will have be pleasantly surprised at how well Adelaide functioned without one.

Expect an expansive and high tempo game, and once the press is passed, a number of great scoring chances. Adelaide will probably have too much class and should get the home win they missed out on last week.

Adelaide United 3- Newcastle Jets 2.
