Match result:

Adelaide have advanced to the semi finals of the FFA Cup, with two second half goals enough to see off a valiant APIA Leichhardt 2-nil.

While the first half chances were largely off the boot of Adelaide, the half time nil-all scoreline game the NPL outfit hope that they could take the game in the second half.

Adelaide started the second half the stronger, however still could not get the scoreboard advantage. When Sekiya came to life for APIA, with some wonderful chances, only for Paul Izzo to save the day, you felt that the upset might be on again.

However, goals to Craig Goodwin, a wonder strike, and Mikro Boland with a regulation header, gave the A-League side the win and passage into the final four.

Not a match high on quality, but enough memorable moments to keep you interested.

Final score
Apia Leichhardt Tigers FC – 0
Adelaide United – 2

Can the giant-killers continue their run as the NPL darling APIA Leichhardt Tigers come up against the might of the A-League’s Adelaide United in the quarter-finals of the FFA Cup. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7:30pm (AEST).

Can lightning strike twice with the same team in the same location?

No doubt Apia Leichhardt will be thinking to themselves if they can knock off a reigning A-League champion, then why not Adelaide United. The key for the Tigers against the Victory was two aspects.

Firstly, Apia played a 90-minute performance. Now, that is not to say they dominated for 90 minutes, or that they played mistake-free football. Not by a long shot.

But Apia remained in the contest for 90 minutes. They stuck to their game plan, they rose to the challenge when they were under pressure, and they played disciplined football when the momentum swung their way. They will have to repeat that effort here tonight.

The second thing which won the game for Apia over Melbourne was the ability to take their chances. All three of them.

Taking chances will again be paramount against an Adelaide side who will feel confident they can take down the giant-killer and advance.

Marco Kurz would have been making very clear to his players that tonight’s match will not be easy. If Apia’s win over Melbourne was not enough evidence (and it should be) that NPL sides are formidable opponents, then Sydney’s near-elimination against Avondale will have sealed the deal.

Working in Adelaide’s favour is that they should have a few more kilometres of preseason training under their belts, and with only a few weeks out from the season proper starting, that extra level of fitness and touch should be invaluable against a battle-weary NPL opponent who lost a grand final.

Prediction
I will take a conservative approach, and tip the Reds. While the Magic of the Cup would be delightful to see another upset, the good money should be on a hardened Reds outfit, with fresher legs, getting the job done against the NPL side.

Adelaide United 3-1.
