The Socceroos will need to be at their best to deal with Oman in a crucial World Cup qualifying match in Doha. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 5:30am (AEDT).

After a perfect start to their qualification campaign, the Socceroos face their toughest challenge yet, up against a dangerous Oman side that shocked Japan in its opening fixture before succumbing to Saudi Arabia in its second.

Those results place Oman third in the group at this point in time, and three points in arrears of the Australians, with a win here looking sure to be huge for the victors’ chances of heading to Qatar.

The Australians are confident, relatively healthy, and eager to keep notching up the wins to avoid the stressful experiences of recent qualification campaigns. Oman will be aware that a loss could put them well behind the eight-ball when it comes to Qatar 2022 qualification, and thus a cracking contest in the magnificent Khalifa International Stadium looms.

Graham Arnold will likely enter the match with his strongest eleven, with Awer Mabil, Martin Boyle and Tom Rogic potentially holding the attacking keys for the Socceroos and Trent Sainsbury, Harry Souttar, Rhyan Grant and Aziz Behich once again providing the stable base at the back.

Prediction

Australia will enter the match as firm favourites; yet Oman are more than capable of creating an upset. Expect them to attempt to suffocate and frustrate the Australians, hoping to pinch a goal on the counter or against the general run of play.

Key for the Australians will be their ability to create enough chances to eventually break down what will be a physical and competent Oman defensive unit.

With confidence in the squad high, a 2-0 win for the Australians looks a solid bet and would provide an excellent lead in to their match against Japan next Tuesday.
