The Aussies haven’t set foot on home soil since a 5-0 win over Nepal in Canberra in October 2019, but Graham Arnold’s men will run out in front of a boisterous crowd in Parramatta when they take on current Group B leaders Saudi Arabia.
The Saudis have won four games from four to get their second-round qualification campaign off to a flyer, claiming the major scalp of Japan thanks to a 1-0 win in Jeddah last month.
Herve Renard’s side followed that up with a 3-2 win over China in front of a fanatical home crowd at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium, where Australia can expect to receive a hostile reception in the return fixture next March.
Graham Arnold has some selection headaches to contend with tonight, as Aaron Mooy, Tom Rogic and Adam Taggart are all unavailable, while there are serious questions marks over the fitness of midfielder Ajdin Hrustic after he missed Eintracht Frankfurt’s two most recent fixtures through an ankle injury.
That should see in-form Birmingham City midfielder Riley McGree slot into the starting side, while Melbourne City’s star signing Mat Leckie is also likely to return after missing the last four games over quarantine issues.
The Saudis are equally depleted, with marauding full-back Yasser Al-Shahrani joining towering central defender Abdullah Madu on the absentee list. An even bigger concern is the absence of starting goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais through injury, with his replacement Fawaz Al-Qarni hardly the most experienced of deputies.
The Socceroos have dominated this fixture over the years, drawing 2-2 in Jeddah and downing the Saudis 3-2 in Adelaide en route to qualifying for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
They’ll hope to claim all three points at what could be a wet Western Sydney Stadium tonight, as they look to close the gap on the table-topping Green Falcons.
