Brisbane Roar and Central Coast Mariners do battle at Suncorp Stadium, both looking to get their seasons underway with a valuable three points. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 5pm (AEDT).

John Aloisi’s men somehow found a way to the finals last season, on the back of the majority of the injured squad returning late in the season and for a moment, looked as good as anyone in the A-League.

It is vitally important for the club that the momentum is continued, now that there has been a freshening of the group and an addition of some real class up front.

Adam Taggart could be they buy of the season if he is able to recapture his Jet’s form. Stefan Mauk and Tobias Mikkelsen add depth in the mid-field and with Eric Bautheac servicing Taggart up front, Roar fans might well have cause for excitement.

The Mariners have been the talk of their town and just about every other town over the last two months, with Usain Bolt trialling with the club and scoring goals.

Despite rumours of a European move, Bolt looks set on establishing himself in Australia. If the rest of the squad can put all the hype to one side and concentrate on football this weekend, they do have some new weapons that may prove a challenge for Brisbane.

Ross McCormack is back for another Australian stint and he will score goals, no doubt. Tommy Oar also returns to Australia looking to re-energise his career and Kalifa Cisse will be the rock upon which new manager Mike Mulvey attempts to build his defence.

With Aiden O’Neill (on loan from Burnley), Mario Shabow and Michael McGlinchey joining the midfield stocks and Matt Simon and Jordan Murray looking to provide second and third options up front, it could be suggested that the squad has slipped a little under the radar while Bolt mania continues to grip the league.

Prediction
The Roar will surprise many opposition fans this season and look like a top four team on paper. It should be a glorious start to the season with a win against a Central Coast team needing a few weeks of play before its full potential starts to emerge.
