Match Result

Western United made it two wins from two and piled on more misery for Brisbane Roar manager Robbie Fowler.

There was plenty of huff and puff from the Roar but they were desperately bereft of any quality in front of goal.

Western United took the lead ten minutes in when a delicious Alessandro Diamanti cross found Connor Pain at the back post and the wing-back slotted past Jamie Young.

Besart Berisha doubled the away sides advantage when he converted Aaron Calver’s cross on the stroke of half time.

Western United were happy to sit back in the second half and the Roar couldn’t find a way past Filip Kurto to continue to finish off their woeful 2019 at Suncorp Stadium.

Plenty more for Fowler to ponder but United’s Mark Rudan will be a happy man as his side moves into third spot.

Brisbane head coach Robbie Fowler will be looking for a response from his side after their 5-1 drubbing to Sydney FC last weekend. There’s no disgrace in losing to the league leaders, but the meek display led to Fowler describing it as a “wake-up call”. The defeat saw the Roar drop to eighth on the ladder, but a victory would see them jump into fifth spot – temporarily at least.

Western United ended a run of three consecutive defeats with a 3-1 win against Melbourne Victory, striker Besart Berisha notching a brace against his old club to take his seasons tally to five goals.

He’ll be looking to inflict more misery on his one of his other former employers tonight. The A-League’s all-time record goalscorer enjoyed three stellar seasons with the Roar from 2011 to 2014, taking out two championships and finding the net 48 times.

The game could hinge on both teams’ creative sparks. For the Roar, Irish schemer Jay O’Shea has created 27 goalscoring chances so far this season – the most by any player in the competition.

For the opposition, Italian Alessandro Diamanti has shown his class, with many marvelling at his cultured left boot. He lies just behind O’Shea with 24 chances created.

Prediction
The Roar have been a difficult one to call thus far this term. The return of Berisha should add a little bit of spice to the affair, with Brisbane surely looking to put last weekend’s nightmare showing firmly behind them. I’m plumping for a score draw.
