Show Preview

The Brisbane Strikers hold the hopes of the NPL clubs on their shoulders when they look to become the first second-tier club to make the decider of the FFA Cup as they take on Melbourne City in the first semi-final. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7:30pm (AEST).

While the Strikers will be somewhat disappointed with their NPL season in Queensland, where they finished fifth and missed the finals, they have been strong in the FFA Cup.

After navigating the various qualifying rounds with ease, which included a seventh-round 5-1 drubbing of the Gold Coast Knights, they were drawn to play A-League club the Wellington Phoenix in the Round of 32.

That ended in a win on penalties, and with the draw looking after them since, they have gone past Manly United 1-0 and the Mooreland Zebras in a cliffhanger of a quarter-final, with the final score reading 3-2.

City’s preparation for the upcoming A-League season, which gets underway in less than a fortnight, has been strong, although the club did lose a match against Adelaide United recently.

By all reports though, Jamie Maclaren and Craig Noone have been in great form, and is being fed well from a strong midfield, which the Strikers may struggle to contain this evening.

The Melbourne-based club have blitzed through their FFA Cup campaign with relative ease to date, picking up comfortable wins over Campbelltown City and the Marconi Stallions, before blasting past the Western Sydney Wanderers 3-0 in an all A-League quarter-final.

While the Strikers do have a victory over an A-League side in this campaign, beating them in the Round of 32 so early in the pre-season, compared to the quarter-final, when teams are just about ready for the regular season, is going to be a hard ask.

If the home side are to get over the line, watch out for Ryan Palmer and skipper Jacob McLean to lead the way.

Prediction
It’s hard to see City going down here, even being away from home.

Strikers 1 – City 3.
