Match result:

Adelaide United have defeated Central Coast Mariners at Gosford Stadium with the final score being 3-1.

The Mariners opened the scoring in the sixth minute, courtesy of a beautiful Milan Duric penalty after Samuel Silvera did very well to draw a foul in the box off Michael Marrone.

The goal lifted the Mariners spirits, and they had some good chances, with the pick of the bunch being Duric’s volley from just outside the D, which unfortunately ended up straight at the keeper.

However, it was Adelaide United who levelled the score in the twenty-sixth minute through Ben Halloran. Michael Maria did enough stepovers to make it awkward, before confidently skipping away from Samuel Silvera.

Ben Halloran and Riley McGree played a fabulous one-two before Halloran powerfully hit it towards the near post.

Ever since that goal, it appeared to be all Adelaide, and they justified that by scoring just twelve minutes later.

It was yet again Michael Maria who this time got around Jordan Murray. Maria cut it back beautifully to Nikola Mileusnic, who finished it stunningly into the top corner on the volley.

The Adelaide part went on, and they grabbed a third after a lapse in concentration from the Mariners in defence.

It was Ben Halloran who made the goal, sprinting to get to a ball from James Troisi which seemed to be a lost cause. He squared it to Kristian Opseth, who easily tapped it home to open his A-League account.

The second half was far less eventful, with the biggest moment being a missed penalty from Opseth. Opseth stepped up to take the spot-kick, but never looked comfortable and hit it underwhelmingly straight into Birighitti’s foot.

For the Mariners, it means they will be reviewing the match dully and will be taking on Western United in their next match.

Adelaide will be thrilled with the football they played and will look forward to taking on Melbourne Victory next Saturday night.

Match preview:

Central Coast Mariners and Adelaide United will be opening this weekend’s A-League with the FFA-cup Semi-Final rematch on an unusual Saturday, with three teams having a bye. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match from 5pm AEDT.

Both teams are coming into this game with different circumstances. The Mariners are coming into this game on the back of a 3-1 away loss to Melbourne City and will be looking to show that their surprise win against Perth Glory away from home was not a fluke.

Their fans will be aching to see Samuel Silvera in action, and he will want to prove that he’s worth the hype. The Mariners currently sit eighth on the table with four points from four games.

On the other hand, Adelaide United are coming off a dull win against Brisbane Roar and will be looking to show that they can play more free-flowing football, but the Mariners will be looking to stop that and attain their first clean sheet this season.

Adelaide currently sit fifth on the A-League ladder, with six points from four games. The Mariners will be welcoming quite a few players back from injuries and international duty, with the main ones being Abraham Majok, Mario Shabow and Dylan Ruiz-Diaz, who made his debut last year.

Adelaide United also are welcoming back a few big names, with Jordan Elsey and George Blackwood being included in the squad after respective injuries, and Louis D’Arrigo coming back from international duty.

A player to watch for the Mariners is Samuel Silvera. He glides around the field, but when is on the ball provides such pace and power.

He is a danger no matter where he is on the field and is always looking to attack the goal, whether it’s shooting, playing a pass or dribbling.

For Adelaide United, it’s James Troisi. Troisi is a key part of Adelaide’s team and has the potential to grow into this deep playmaker role.

However, he needs to help his side retain the ball more often, and only play the pass if it’s on.

My prediction is 2-1 to Adelaide United, with Adelaide’s class ending up to be a bit too much for an exciting Central Coast Mariners side.
