The Central Coast Mariners and Adelaide United face-off in the second semi-final of the FFA Cup, with a battle for silverware in the final against Melbourne City on the cards for the victor. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:30pm (AEST).

Having not moved beyond the Round of 32 over the previous four FFA Cup competitions, the Mariners have the opportunity to do something they have never done before and qualify for the final.

In the cup’s inaugural season, the men in yellow did make the semi-finals, yet since, things have been grim when it comes to both cup and A-League competition.

There is much hope on the Central Coast and Alen Stajcic looked to have imparted his style and influence on the team late last season when he took over a Mariners side in turmoil.

He will need a great deal from his experienced players this season, yet the signs have been positive in the cup thus far, with his team moving through the rounds courageously to this point. Defeating Brisbane Roar on penalties showed immense spirit and Hume City were a stern test in the quarter-final.

Adelaide have hummed along well through the rounds, scoring nine goals in three matches, yet they did have a tough fight on their hands against Newcastle Jets when they managed to scrape home by a single goal. The Reds are the undeniable champs of cup competition, the reigning holders, and the only team to have two FFA Cups on their mantelpiece.

A third would cement their status as Australian cup football’s best team. Adelaide look a real A-League threat this season, with some bigger and more imposing bodies in front of goal and new manager Gertjan Verbeek will be hoping to see something from his squad tonight, in what looms as the biggest match thus far in his tenure.

Prediction
It’s tough to go past the Reds in this one despite the home ground advantage enjoyed by the Mariners. I think they will get the job done comfortably with Al Hassan Toure, Nikola Mileusnic and Riley McGree causing all sorts of problems in the Central Coast defence.
