Two of the A-League’s most inconsistent sides face off this evening as both Central Coast Mariners and Melbourne Victory look for a key three points. Join The Roar for live scores from 6pm (AEDT).
14 April, 2013. Yep, that’s the last time the Mariners managed to beat the Victory in an A-League match, their 1-0 semi-final win paving the way for a one and only competition crown the week after.
Since those heady days under Graham Arnold, the Mariners have fallen away dramatically, though with manager Alen Stajcic at the helm, they’ve shown signs of turning a corner in the 2019/20 season.
However, with only three wins and a draw to their name so far, they’re still rooted in second-last on the ladder – though thanks to the evenness of this season so far, that means they’re only five points behind the sixth-placed Victory.
Things looked dire for the Victory after seven games under new manager Marco Kurz, with just one win.
However, since an upset 1-0 triumph on the road against the Perth Glory in November, the perennial contenders have turned a corner – and coming to Gosford off the back of an impressive 4-0 triumph over the Jets, they’re back in familiar territory inside the top six.
They’re without key man Ola Toivonen through injury, but Robbie Kruse’s strong form should help cover that loss.
A win would also see them leapfrog local rivals Western United into fifth place, with the teams above them within close reach.
Prediction
Despite their uneven performances throughout the campaign so far, the Mariners have proven themselves to be capable of pulling off a scalp.
Melbourne Victory, though, will take great confidence from their performance against the Jets last weekend, and should take the chocolates today.
