Match result:

The points were shared in Gosford for the first F3 Derby of the season as momentum shifted multiple times across the 90 minutes.

Central Coast opened the scoring early through Milan Djuric, converting a volley at the back post just four minutes in.

The share of the play remained with the Mariners for most of the first half as Newcastle slowly grew into the match.

At half time, Newcastle coach Ernie Merrick brought on attacking left back Bobby Burns for Johnny Koutroumbis, while Central Coast were forced into replacing Jordan Murray with Matt Simon. Murray heading into the rooms at half time with a tight hamstring.

Newcastle continued to draw saves out of Mark Birighitti into the second half, but the Mariners were holding on.

Giancarlo Gallifuoco gave away a penalty for handball, which Dimi Petratos took and Birighitti saved behind for a corner.

VAR then decided to award a retake of the penalty and a yellow card for Birighitti for coming off his line marginally early.

Petratos stepped up again and this time converted. Somewhat controversially, VAR missed Hoffman’s encroachment into the area on the retake.

Newcastle finished the stronger of the two sides, but Central Coast’s defence held strong.

The Mariners had a good chance to steal it late with a Djuric strike cannoning into the post, but the rebound spilled wide. Confirming the score would stay at 1-1.

Central Coast have the bye next week, while Newcastle host Adelaide on Saturday evening,

Match preview:

The Central Coast Mariners host the Newcastle Jets for the first F3 Derby of the season. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7:30pm (AEDT).

Central Coast got off to a somewhat promising start to the A-League season, hitting the front against Western Sydney through a Milan Duric strike from the top of the box.

Some key saves made by Mark Birighitti bailed his defenders out but ultimately they weren’t able to hang on as a Mitchell Duke double saw WSW come out on top 2-1.

Newcastle had the bye in round 1 and they will open their campaign tonight.

Across the three times these teams faced each other last season, Newcastle won the first two 2-1 and 1-0 respectively. While Central Coast won the last match 3-2.

Amongst the new signings for Newcastle is a familiar name on the Central Coast. Matt Millar signed a pre-contract agreement with Newcastle last December to leave the Mariners and join their rivals.

Northern Irish midfielder Bobby Burns, Panamanian striker Abdiel Arroyo and former WSW, Melbourne City, Brisbane and Central Coast winger Nick Fitzgerald will also be making their first A-League appearances for Newcastle.

For Central Coast, Ruon Tongyik comes back from injury while captain Matt Simon returns from his suspension earned from the red card in their FFA Cup semi-final loss to Adelaide United.

Korean import Eun Sun Kim will have to wait a little longer to make his A-League debut. He misses again through a leg injury.

Prediction
Neither side looks terribly stronger than the other, but Central Coast have had a week to clear out the cobwebs. Which Newcastle will have to do the opening minutes tonight if they are to have a hope of winning.

If Newcastle score first they would be in a better position to hang on than the Mariners, but the Mariners are more likely to score first.
