Match preview:

The Central Coast Mariners and the Newcastle Jets play in one of the A-League’s most traditional clashes at Central Coast Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 5pm (AEDT).

He’s baaack! Roy O’Donovan returns to the Jets line-up; finally completing his long suspension after the madness of last year’s decider.

It has been a long wait for Ernie Merrick and his front line, yet they have scrapped their way through the early portion of the season.

Currently sitting seventh on the ladder and with a chance to go higher following a win today, the two wins and two draws they have managed isn’t an awful return, considering the absence of Joey Champness and O’Donovan.

Contrastingly, it has been a nightmare start to the season for the Mariners. Mike Mulvey had enormous personnel changes to mould into a squad and to this point, he has failed.

That is not to say that brighter things don’t lie ahead for Central Coast, yet without a win and just two draws of which to speak, something has to change and soon.

Their play has been far from awful, yet a leaky defence and an impotent attack has seen them concede three times as many goals as they have scored.

Still without Tommy Oar, Corey Gameiro, Ross McCormack, Ben Kennedy and Tom Hiariej, the clubs’ issues are magnified.

However, it is up to the experienced members of the team such as Connor Pain, Andrew Hoole and Matt Simon to lead the younger men into battle once more.

At some point, the Mariners will turn their form around, yet with so many injuries and limited goal-scoring options up front, the Jets will prove a tough nut to crack in Gosford.

Prediction
This should play out as a bridge too far for the Mariners on their home deck.

Newcastle have been improving over the last month and with a focal point up front now allowing other players to return to their more natural roles, another step forward will be taken.

I expect to see goals in this one and the majority of them stemming from the feet of Jets players.
