A mismatched battle on paper looks set to unfold when the Central Coast Mariners face the high-flying Sydney FC. Join The Roar for our live scores and updates from 6:00pm (AEDT).
To use a boxing analogy, if the Mariners and Sydney were two heavyweight fighters with their current form sheets, there’s every chance this bout would be stopped in the first round.
They are polar opposites. Sydney are first in the standings, a huge ten points ahead of their nearest challengers Melbourne City with the added comfort of three games in hand. The Mariners are at the foot of the table, albeit by just the one point.
Sydney have convincingly won their last five league matches. The Mariners haven’t found a win since their epic triumph over Melbourne Victory all the way back in January.
The only sour note for Sydney is their recent loss in the AFC Champions League when Yokohama F Marinos easily saw them off by four goals to nil. That was humbling but the A-League has been their playground this season and the thought of playing the bottom team will entice Steve Corica and his players.
The Mariners are able to call upon Tommy Oar and Matt Simon again after their return from injury and they’ll need something to change if they’re to gain anything from the tie.
Prediction
It’s hard to see anything but an away win in Gosford.
