It hasn’t been an easy season – or few seasons – for Alen Stajcic and the Mariners. It’s been said many times, but 18 losses from 23 starts is nowhere near good enough in a salary-capped league.
They won’t get near the finals this season, but they can start to build some momentum and repair the culture at the club somewhat in their remaining matches. Stajcic needs to get some runs on the board for his own job security as well.
Tonight they will look to stop the rot and avenge a 3-1 defeat against Western Sydney back in February. If you remember, that was a game the Mariners were very much in until late on, and the Wanderers’ third goal was only scored in injury time.
The Wanderers need to kickstart their run to the finals with a win against the Mariners. Consistency – something they’ve lacked all season – is key for Jean-Paul de Marigny’s side and they will need to pick up points in most, if not all, of their remaining fixtures to remain in the finals hunt.
De Marigny will be hoping for a better return from import Simon Cox in their remaining fixtures. The No. 9 got his Wanderers stint off to the perfect start when these sides last met, but since then he’s only added one more to his goals tally. To his credit, Cox has notched two assists, so he is getting involved when not hitting the back of the net himself.
Prediction
It’s difficult to see the Mariners coming away with anything tonight unfortunately. Expect a comfortable 2-0 win from the visitors in this one.
