Liverpool have have won their sixth European Cup title, with goals in the opening and closing minutes of the game to deliver victory over Tottenham Hotspurs 2-nil.

Liverpool were awarded a penalty for a Sissoko handball within 25 seconds of kick-off, and Mohamed Salah duly converting from the spot.From there Liverpool simply played the smarter football, with neither side really threatening again in the first half.

Both teams came out with slightly more intent in the second half, and with Tottenham chasing the game, you thought they might create more chances or show the greater urgency.

However, Liverpool were simply unbreakable at the back, Virgil van Dijk showing in 90 minutes why Liverpool had been so unbreakable throughout the entire domestic season.

Hyung Min Son looked the most likely for Tottenham, but could not find the final product.

The gamble by Mauricio Pochettino to start Harry Kane did not pay off, the English frontman largely ineffective.

Kane’s evening was summed up with his desperate attempt to win a late penalty being adjudged a dive by the on-field officials.

Liverpool put the game and result beyond doubt with a clinical finish from Divock Origi scoring as the final minutes of regulation time ticked away.

While Tottenham had shots in the final 5 minutes of stoppage time, the result was done, and the Liverpudlian players, coaches and fans erupted with the final whistle.

The game was far from a classic, and Tottenham will wonder if they could have been more creative in attack, but at the end of the game, the history books will show Liverpool 2-nil winners, and champions of Europe once again.

They were not meant to make it past the group stage, nor were they supposed to get past the might of Messi and Barcelona, yet here they stand on the cusp of a remarkable European triumph.

Even more at stake for the Anfield club is their coach, who comes into this clash on the back of a personal 6-game losing streak in finals.

Truly would a win in Madrid be even sweeter for Jurgen.

Standing in the way of the European giant is the north London giant, who not only ridden their luck, but potentially used up luck for this life and the next.

Spurs come into this clash as huge outsiders, and that is exactly how they will want it, having essentially been outsiders the whole season.

However, much like Liverpool, Tottenham have shown grit, determination, and at times sublime skill to thwart the might of Saudi money in Manchester, and defeat tactical nous over Ajax.

What will be even tastier for Tottenham is that this Champions League campaign has truly been a backs to the wall type of showing, having lost their star Harry Kane, and having made it this far with a squad that was criticised for lacking depth last off-season, with no additions made.

Tottenham will look to boost their squad with the addition of Kane, though the question remains whether he will be able to start, and should the English starlet take the field, it would do nothing less than give both the team and its supporters a massive boost.

Liverpool had the wood over Tottenham during the domestic season, notching up 2-1 wins both at home and away in the league.

Prediction
You have to go with the legacy and form when it comes to finals, at Liverpool come into this game off the back of a strong domestic season, a stunning win over Barcelona, and the history of five European cups behind them.

Add in the lessons they learned from losing last year’s showpiece, and it should be enough for the Reds to get the job done of Spurs.
