The Matildas need at least a draw out of this, preferably a win, after a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Italy in their tournament opener.

Australia pushed the Europeans hard but got sucker-punched with a goal in the final minute.

As Group C stands, Brazil are on top with three points after thrashing Jamaica 3-0, Italy are second on three points, while the Matildas are third.

This game looks as a vital one for the green and gold to turn things around.

The fallout from their Italian defeat has been extensive. The Matildas’ high line, poor passing and lax execution has been under fire, as has coach Ante Milicic.

For their opponents, they had a great win over Jamaica as they ended a nine-match losing streak. Striker Cristiane became the oldest person to score a hat-trick at the World Cup as her treble fired her side to victory.

Six-time world player of the year Marta will be hoping to feature against the Matildas, although it may be from the bench as she battles to overcome a thigh injury.

Brazil, ranked 10th in the world, will be full of confidence facing Australia, who are ranked sixth by FIFA.

But the Matildas historically have a great record against the South Americas and are a slight favourite with the bookies.

Worryingly, they also have an injury crisis developing with Clare Polkinghorne, Lisa de Vanna and Caitlin Foord all in some doubt for the match.

Australia could throw in Mary Fowler and Elise Kellond-Knight to face the Brazilians.

Prediction
This is almost too tough to call, with the Matildas on paper the better team but Brazil in better form and with the better recent run of results. The Aussies are under the pump and need to perform or go home early.
