Matildas vs Chile: International friendly football match result

Match result:

Australia started brightly opening the scoring in the third minute through Sam Kerr. Chile defended very firmly for the rest of the first half to see out the constant Australian threats. The score at half time was 1-0.

The second half started in much the same fashion with Australia applying all the pressure. The match opened up as both teams turned to their benches, but it was Sam Kerr who scored again.

Kerr admitted post-match that Australia played very well for 75 minutes, but fell off after then. The scoreline would agree with that assessment as Chile got one back through Camila Sáez’s header from a corner.

Chile finished the stronger of the two sides, but time was on Australia’s side as they hung on to win 2-1. These two teams play each other again on Tuesday night in Adelaide.

Match preview:

The Matildas return home to face Chile for a two-match friendly series in what forms a bit of an opener for the W-League which starts next weekend. The first of these matches takes place this afternoon at Bankwest Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 3pm (AEDT).

The first series of matches for Australia since their World Cup campaign came to an end in June comes against a familiar opponent. 

These two teams met in a friendly series this time last year, Chile won the first of those matches 3-2 with Australia winning the second one 5-0.

Chile went out in the group stage of the World Cup, but have played a pair of matches against Uruguay in October. Chile won both of those matches 3-0 and 3-1 respectively.

As always for Australia the powerful front third of Sam Kerr, Caitlin Foord and Hayley Raso will be a threat for goals. 



Chile meanwhile will have their all-time leading scorer Francisca Lara leading their attack. Captain and PSG goalkeeper Christiane Endler has proven very difficult to beat for the national team, conceding just 3 goals in 7 matches in the last edition of The Copa America Femenina.

Australia have made a few changes from their World Cup squad with Jenna McCormick and Emma Checker being recalled and goalkeeper Sarah Willacy earning her first call up to the national squad. 


Gema Simon, Lisa De Vanna, Tegan Micah, Mary Fowler and Teigan Allen have come out of the squad, whilst Elise Kellond-Knight was initially named, but had withdrawn due to fitness concerns.

For Chile Javiera Roa, Yazmín Torrealba, María Francisca Mardones, Nayadet López and Antonia Canales, replace Valentina Diaz, Claudia Soto, Maria Jose Rojas, Javiera Grez, Yessinia Huento, Elisa Duran, Ryann Torrero from their World Cup squad.

Prediction
The Matildas have a stronger squad on paper, but Chile have shown in the recent past that when they turn up, they will be hard to beat.

The question is, will Chile turn up? They tend to do better in the first match of two-match series. So with that in mind…
