The Matildas take on Indonesia in their opening match of the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 9pm AEDT.

Australia’s favourite sporting team takes its first step towards a second Asian Cup title, up against Indonesia in Mumbai to open the latest edition of the tournament.

Japan has won the previous two Asian Cups and the Australians have grown a little tired of playing the bridesmaid in the last two finals, with Tony Gustavsson’s powerful squad ready to mount a serious challenge to the Japanese after a slick lead up training camp in Dubai.

Tonight’s fixture should really be a walk in the park for the Australians, with Indonesia ranked 94th in the world and unlikely to be able to withstand the pressure applied by the Matildas for any length of time. A four or five goal win is a likely outcome, yet how the coach chooses to set up his team will be interesting, with six matches to be played across 17 days and fresh legs to be vital during the knockout phase that begins on January 30th.

It will be fascinating to see just how Gustavsoon deploys his troops in this one, with the over-arching goal of an Asian Cup triumph no doubt dictating his early decisions.

Prediction
The Matildas have waited a long time for this opportunity and I would not expect them to waste it. A serious belting could well be on the cards for an Indonesian team that simply does not have the skill or quality to compete with the Australians.
