New Matildas manager Ante Milicic has made a positive start with his charges and now faces the best of the best in a valuable World Cup tune-up against the United States.
With the pinnacle of women’s football on offer in just a few months time and both these teams with dreams and aspirations of holding up the silverware, this match will be valued highly by both sides.
The Matildas come off three straight victories in the Cup of Nations on home soil and with a well-rested squad, are now ready to launch into their taper for an assault on what could be a historic moment for Australian football in France this June.
The Americans’ recent form has been less than imperious, with 2-2 draws against both Japan and Great Britain in the SheBelieves Cup. They also managed a 1-0 win over Brazil early last month and will know that the Australians could potentially be the toughest test they have faced in recent times.
Prediction
In a match with potentially a host of changes as the manager’s experiment with combinations and search for a starting World Cup 11, goals seem certain.
With personnel changes comes miscommunication and this match could very well open up in the second half after what will probably be a cagey opening, as the two teams feel each other out.
If that prediction does prove to be the case, the Australians speed up top through Sam Kerr, Caitlin Foord and Tameka Butt could be the key to victory.
In a match that means little yet all so much at the same time, the Matildas should get home in a high scoring affair 3-2.
