Top-two hopefuls Melbourne City host Adelaide United at ANZ Stadium for your Tuesday night football. Join The Roar for live scores from 7:30pm (AEST).

City’s spot in the finals is secure, but they’ve still got Wellington threatening to take their place in the top-two. They currently sit two points ahead of the New Zealand side and boast a game in hand, but Erick Mombaerts will want to secure a second-place finish tonight to avoid leaving it to the final day of the season against Western United.

Mombarets’ side only had three games to complete post-COVID break and got off to the best possible start with a 2-0 win over premiers Sydney FC. That win was a statement to the rest of the league and showcased their title credentials.

However, while Sydney had reasons to be complacent, tonight’s opponents Adelaide are playing for their finals lives in their last game of the season. City will have to be sharp again to hold off the Reds’ charge and come into the clash with a noticeable disadvantage in match fitness.

Adelaide are undefeated since the resumption of play, managing two draws to go along with their two wins. It’s an impressive record but their inconsistent play before the break may ultimately be their demise.

Their finals destiny is not completely in their own hands. They currently sit in sixth, but in all likelihood need all three points tonight to finish the season there and even that may not be enough to save their season.

This is their final game of the regular season and three points would see them finish with a total of 38 points. This would leave them with a five-point gap over the only side that’s able to catch them, Western United.

Considering their poor goal difference of -5, however, and Western United’s +8, in practice it would only be a four-point margin.

Prediction
Adelaide will be desperate, but I was really impressed with City’s performance against Sydney. Melbourne City to get the job done 2-1.
