Match preview:

It is fourth place hosting seventh in the Victorian capital, as Melbourne City meet Newcastle Jets in the Sunday evening round 11 A-League fixture. Join The Roar from 5pm (AEDT) for live scores and updates of the match.

This match spells danger game for both sides this evening.

Melbourne can create a bit more comfort for themselves in fourth spot with a win tonight, thanks to Adelaide’s continued inability to win at home.

Melbourne will also be looking to maintain that touching distance with the top three.

City are enjoying a bit of form lately, unbeaten in their last three, and only the two losses in their last six.

Coming off a smash and grab job against Western Sydney, they will have enjoyed an extra day’s rest over their opponents for this game.

But there is danger lurking around the corner, in the form of an opposition who will be eager to redeem themselves after dropping two points on Wednesday night against Brisbane.

To say Newcastle were unlucky during the week does Brisbane a disservice, however with the number of chances that Newcastle created, they had enough to win the match.

And therein lies the danger for Melbourne.

If Newcastle manage to continue creating the number of chances they have of late, and convert them, Melbourne could find themselves on the end of an unnecessary loss (although, is a loss ever really necessary?).

Newcastle have some firepower at their disposal in the form of Vargas, O’Donovan, and Petratos, who showed some of his 17/18 form in the first half of Wednesday’s game.

So while this is fourth playing seventh, the ability of the sides is still quite evenly matched.

Prediction
Hard to go past the home side. Sitting fourth, a chance to maintain the pursuit of top 3, and fresher than a misfiring Newcastle, all the metrics that matter point to a Melbourne City win.

On form as well, I just can’t see Newcastle righting the conversion wrongs they have been suffering of late.

Melbourne City 3-nil.
