Match preview:

We head to AAMI Park, Melbourne, as Melbourne City return to the comforts of home after their stunning mid-week loss to the Mariners, to face an opponent at the other end of the table, Perth Glory. Join The Roar from 7:50pm (AEDT) for live scores and blog of the game.

So Melbourne City drew the short straw, and ended up being the first team to lose to Central Coast this season. Who saw that coming?

Certainly not this writer, who tipped a 2-nil win to City.

Perhaps more importantly, how does City bounce back from that result? There is no better test after losing to the bottom, than coming up against the top.

The difference mid-week was City’s defence. The team that has only conceded ten goals across 12 rounds leaked two in the one game to the team running last.

This week becomes even bigger for City, who would have been hoping to cut the gap to Perth by six points including the Mariners game, instead finding themselves trying to keep Wellington at bay, who are snapping at the heels.

The key for City, not just getting that water-tight defence clicking again, but also how their attacking half recovers from a sapping game in the heat on Wednesday.

Perth come to Melbourne riding high atop the table, but certainly running by the seat of their pants in respect of luck.

Coming back against the likes of Brisbane and the Wanderers is all good and well, but you can’t be expecting to hope that game plan works against top-six opponents.

Tony Popovic will be reminding his charges that in order to win a championship, they cannot give their opponents a look-in, and he will be hoping that Perth can put in more of a 90-minute performance.

It won’t be easy for Perth either, at AAMI Park, where Melbourne have only lost one of their last 10 matches.

Prediction
It is hard to tip City at home, having lost to the Mariners and coming off a three-day break – but equally, Perth aren’t popping at the moment, and you just don’t know what they will deliver.

I think each team’s uncertainty cancels each other out, so the spoils should be shared.

2-all draw
