Match result:

The Newcastle Jets have upset the Melbourne Victory 2-0 infront of a rather poor crowd in Geelong.

Keisuke Honda started the match on fire getting 18 touches in the first 10 minutes in what was a period much dominated by the Big V.

The Victory controlled the game for most of the first 30 minutes but it was during five minutes of dominance from the Jets that Johnny Koutroumbis who has dealt with health problems throughout the whole year, hammered in a goal from the back post.

The Jets controlled the rest of the half but the Victory came out firing and you wouldn’t have much confidence that Newcastle would hold on.

It was in the 73rd minute when James Donachie earnt his first yellow card that things were not as smooth from the Victory.

The first killer blow was when James Donachie had to make a desperation push in early extra time earning him his 2nd yellow card sending him off and giving the Melbourne Victory the title of first A-League team to reach 50 Red Cards.

Dimi Petratos was the star of the show with his hammer shot on his left foot from outside the box which floated in the top corner at the 96th minute.

Match preview:

Melbourne Victory will do battle with the Newcastle Jets at GMBHA Stadium in Geelong. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog from 7:50pm (AEDT).

Melbourne Victory in third place one spot behind the all-important 2nd place position currently occupied by Sydney FC. They also are seven points at the time of writing ahead of fourth placed Adelaide United.

The other dog in the fight, the Newcastle Jets are running out of time to make the finals as they are five points behind the sixth placed Wellington Phoenix. They also sit six points ahead of the seventh placed Western Sydney Wanderers.

Melbourne Victory will be weakened by the suspension of Centre Back George Niedermeier who was suspended it last week’s Melbourne Derby.

I’ll be interested to see if Melbourne’s defence can cope with what is a very unique attack that Newcastle have which consists with Kaine Sheppard and Jair who are more striking players, playing as Wide Mids.

Prediction
The Jets have never really looked like a finals team this year and Melbourne Victory always have been. The Jets are on their last gasp but will be too weak for the Victory.
