The Newcastle Jets and Adelaide United play in an important early-season game to open up a slight gap between the top six and the bottom four. Join The Roar from Hunter Stadium for live scores and commentary from 7:30pm (AEST).

Newcastle has certainly had an inconsistent start to their season, but a comeback last week against main rivals Central Coast may put them on the right track.

Roy O’Donovan is back to lead the line, while Dimitri Petratos, Jair, Rodrigo Vargas and Jason Hoffman are all ranked in the top 20 for shots on goal for the year.

The lack of potency in attack may just require a little bit of luck to turn the Jets back into an attacking machine.

Adelaide United haven’t enjoyed their last few trips to Hunter Stadium, not winning since 2015 at the venue against the Jets.

After a strong start, the Reds have just one point in their last three matches, with particularly disappointing displays against Melbourne City, and the first half against the Wanderers, highlighting the unpredictability of this team.

Despite only nine matches being played in the 2018/19 A-League seasons, both teams will see this as a defining contest that can set them up for the rest of the season.

With a combination of Adelaide’s shaky defence and the sheer amount of shots the Jets are taking, the home team has every right to be confident.

The Jets’ strike rate in terms of goals-to-shots is the worst in the league, meaning it’s only a matter of time before things change.

Adelaide’s best chance comes from playing a counter-attacking style, targeting the right side when moving the ball forward.

Prediction
It’ll be an intriguing match, if not only because both teams have produced unpredictable football so far this season.

The home team seems to have greater confidence heading into the match, and they could easily put a number of goals in the back of the net.

Adelaide may see their poor form extend this match.

Newcastle 2- 0 Adelaide.
