Match result:

The Central Coast Mariners have won their second match of the 2018/19 A-League season in a dramatic win over their geographical rivals Newcastle Jets.

What a stunning, dramatic and thrilling second half the traditional F3 derby produced, after the sides went to the half-time break at 0-0. The Mariners took control early in the second half with a goal to Jordan Murray in the 51st minute.

Further goals to Jem Karacan and Connor Pain saw the visitors stun the Jets and well on their way to victory. It awoke the home side and goals to Roy O’Donovan and Ronald Vargas had them within a goal with around nine minutes still on the clock.

What followed was chaotic, as the Jets hammered the Mariners goal, they were eventually rewarded with a penalty when O’Donovan was brought down in the box.

The Irishman failed to convert from the spot yet Daniel Georgievski knocked home the rebound and the Jets thought they were level.

The referee was made aware of the goal scorers’ offside positioning from the kick and the Jets were required to retake it with the goal disallowed.

Ben Kennedy saved for a second time and the Mariners held on in a tense final few minutes to stun the Australian footballing community with a gutsy victory.

New manager Alen Stajcic has had an immediate impact and the Mariners fans will be buoyed by the result. Jets manager Ernie Merrick will kick a few stones on the way home, knowing full well that the three points dropped tonight might just be the difference between semi-final play and an early end of season trip away.

The Jets’ madcapped chase for a semi-final spot could become a tangible reality with a win today.

Alternatively, a loss could see them playing cutthroat, sudden death football for the remainder of the competition.

Coming off wins against both Melbourne franchises and a draw with the Reds, Ernie Merrick’s men are one of the form teams in the competition at the present time.

What looms this evening is a potentially awkward clash with their closest geographical rival in the form of the Mariners.

At this point, I would normally mention the visitor’s recent form, however it really hasn’t changed for so long there appears little point.

The Mariners are one of, if not the worst ever team in the 14-year history of the new domestic competition and have conceded 13 goals in their previous two matches against the Roar and the Phoenix.

Those results reeked of a team with its mind on other things; whether that be playing contracts, greener pastures or just a general disinterest in elite performance after what has been an appalling season I am not sure.

Interestingly, former Matildas boss Alen Stajcic steps in to guide the Central Coast for the final six matches of the season.

Frankly, I’m not sure what he can, will or should achieve.

Whatever does happen, the manager’s reputation will remain intact, with any bad losses merely reflective of a very poor team suffering through a miserable season.

The Jets welcome back Ronald Vargas from injury yet lose Johnny Koutroumbus and Joey Champness to international duty.

Andrew Hoole, Tom Hiariej and Connor Pain all come back in for the Mariners yet they lose Aiden O’Neill and Kye Rowles and Stajcic will be forced to reshuffle at the back.

Prediction
It is near impossible to go past the Jets in this one. With so much at stake and the drifting Mariners showing nothing of substance recently, they should dismiss their local rival with a waft of their hand.
