Newcastle Jets and Central Coast Mariners will finish Round 18 of the A-League in style with the second F3 derby of the season at McDonald Jones Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, from 4pm (AEDT).

Big news came for the Jets earlier this week as Carl Robinson has been appointed as head coach following long contract talks. Robinson stated that he had to fulfil certain obligations, which is why the deal took so long to come about, and he added that the main reason he joined Newcastle was because of club CEO Lawrie McKinna.

Roy O’Donovan is back in the side following his signing-on late last week and will be looking to help the Jets find the back of the net more often. Newcastle is in the last place for goals scored this season, scored just 13 times in 15 games.

Wes Hoolahan has been deemed not fit enough to take part in this clash and has not been included in the extended squad, while Connor O’Toole could make his debut for Newcastle after penning a deal which will see him stay at the club until 2021.

The big blow for Central Coast Mariners comes in the form of Jordan Murray, who is out for approximately one week with a foot injury. Murray has been important to the Mariners this season, and although he has registered only two goals and two assists so far in 2019–20, he has made eight starts this campaign and will be missed by his teammates.

However, Murray being out will open up an opportunity for club captain Matt Simon to make just his second start of the campaign, otherwise expect Jair to be called up.

Chris Harold also has the opportunity to make his starting debut in the squad, having signed a six-month deal with the club.

Prediction
Newcastle Jets run of misses should end with the signing of Roy O’Donovan, and they will outclass the Central Coast Mariners, who have struggled to create chances throughout the season.

Newcastle Jets to win 2-0.

Match Review: Newcastle Jets have edged out Central Coast Mariners in a thrilling affair which saw seven goals, with the final score being 4-3 to Newcastle. Newcastle hit the post early in the first half through Steven Ugarkovic, following a blistering shot from just outside the D. The Jets continued their early pressure and finally saw the ball roll into the back of the net through their talisman Dimitri Petratos. Matthew Millar shaped up to cross and delivered a beauty, finding Arroyo at the back post. Arroyo saw how tight the angle was, and instead of shooting played an extremely intelligent ball to Petratos, who made no mistake in rocketing the ball into the back of the net off the volley. But Newcastle wasn’t done yet and doubled their lead in the twenty-fourth minute through centre-back Nikolai Topor-Stanley. Dimitri Petratos whipped the ball into the far post from a corner on the left, and Topor-Stanley was left with a tap-in after out-muscling Lewis Miller just past the far post. However, the Mariners clawed one back late in the first half through unlikely goal-scorer Ruon Tongyik, who grabbed his first in the A-League. Clisby crossed the ball into the six-yard box following a corner on the right and Ruon Tongyik made no mistake in burying the header into the back of the net, halving their local rivals’ lead. The Mariners then equalised early in the first half through another unlikely scorer, Jack Clisby, who found himself free at the back post after a cross from Milan Duric after Lewis Miller was tripped just inside the final third on the right. But Newcastle wasn’t having it, and just three minutes later found themselves once again in the lead after Petratos finished a half-volley empathetically, after seeing multiple attempts blocked. They then had their second two-goal lead of the game after three more minutes, but this time it was through an own goal from En Sun Kim. The Mariners attempted to kickstart a late comeback after Chris Harold netted a goal on his debut. Lewis Italiano failed to clear the ball and it fell to Chris Harold, who cut inside from the right, shifted back and finished with a beautiful curling effort with his right-foot which left Lewis Italiano standing still. This win for Newcastle leaves them level on the bottom of the table with the Mariners, only losing to goal difference. Next week, Newcastle face Western Sydney Wanderers in an important game away from home while the Mariners take on Adelaide United on Friday night at Coopers Stadium. Final Score: Newcastle Jets 4, Central Coast Mariners 3
