A grand final rematch is the highlight of Round 3 in the A-League, with the Newcastle Jets hosting Melbourne Victory in a tantalising encounter on Saturday night. Join The Roar at 7:50pm (AEST) for live scores and updates.
With one point combined from the first two matches, neither team has started their season off anywhere near as well as they would’ve liked. Both teams, however, have put together dominant performances in one, if not both games and must carry some sort of confidence into the match.
The hosts enter this game with retribution on their mind following the infamous scenes in the Grand Final, while fully understanding they beat the Victory twice last season.
Ronald Vargas is looking dangerous while Yerasimakis Petratos has had nine shots in two matches and is certainly the most feared player in Newcastle colours.
Mitch Austin comes up for his first game against the Victory and is a big factor to consider off the bench, particularly with a point to prove.
Newcastle’s midfield and defence provides a solid, workmanlike effort consistently, which is likely to frustrate the likes of Keisuke Honda and James Troisi at Hunter Stadium.
The loss of Kenny Athiu and continued absence of Ola Toivonen may end up being a blessing in disguise for a Victory team that just needs to play a direct style.
Kosta Barbarouses should lead the line, with a rotation as to who stands in the striker position the best way to attack the Jets.
Of course, Honda is the man everyone will have their eyes on after an encouraging start to the season.
With ten shot assists and some genuine creativity unlocking defences thus far, it’s only a matter of time before Honda dominates a match.
The Grand Final rematch may well be the perfect stage.
Prediction
There’ll be a bit of spice in this contest, despite the mass changes across the Victory team.
Both teams need to be attacking from what we’ve seen in the opening fortnight of the season, given the susceptibility in defence from either side.
It comes down to who is most creative pushing forward, and which team can be most effective in sneaking past the opposition back four.
I’m expecting Keisuke Honda to really step up in this game and lead the Victory to its first points of the season.
Newcastle 1–2 Victory
