The Newcastle Jets and the Perth Glory face off at McDonald Jones Stadium in Round 8 A-League action. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 5pm (AEDT).
After a much improved performance last weekend, the Jets look to have somewhat righted the ship. The win against Brisbane was much needed as well as being the source of the three points that saw them move into the top six.
Perth have been less than inspiring recently after a scrappy and lucky draw with Wellington and a hard fought win over City in the west last round.
It therefore shapes as a curious clash between two teams far from their best yet with serious title aspirations in 2018/19.
Ernie Merrick will enter another game without Roy O’Donovan up front yet with both the Irishman and young Joey Champness very close to a return, a win today against Perth sets up a potential run at the top four with all guns blazing.
Kaine Sheppard will get a chance to add to his first A-League goal and also have eyes on cementing a place in the front three, even when the big names return.
Perth remain unbeaten and need a win to return to the top of the ladder after Victory did the job against the Roar on Friday night.
Matthew Spiranovic misses this match after tweaking a hamstring last week against Brisbane, yet Perth look solid with Andy Keogh, Chris Ikonomidis and Diego Castro in ominous form.
Prediction
This match will tell us a lot about the improvement we saw from Newcastle last week.
Against stronger opposition, they will be tested at the back from the opening whistle and will need to combat an extremely potent attack.
Personally, I think what we saw last week was real and tangible and feel that a lethargic Perth over the last fortnight might just be ripe for the picking.
