Truth be told, this game does not hold much meaning in the grand scheme of things. The top six is already settled as well as Sydney’s second spot in the regular season, meaning that they will get the bye in the first week of finals.
Therefore, this game will likely be an opportunity for Sky Blues manager Steve Corica to rest some of his key individuals and give some of his fringe players some time on the pitch. Expect the likes of Luke Ivanovic and Jacob Tratt to start ahead of some of the Sydney stars.
Since that’s the case, it is also a chance for Newcastle Jets to make amends for a disappointing season after falling in the grand finals in 2018 to then not even making the finals this year. Jets manager Ernie Merrick will surely be urging his players to send off the fans in style.
With it being so likely that many of Sydney’s main performers getting rested, it’s unsurprising that Newcastle have been given the favourites tag with odds of a win at $2.50 compared to Sydney’s $2.80.
Prediction
Merrick’s men should have a good time against Sydney’s second team, but they should still not be underestimated.
The Sky Blues still have enough depth in quality, and they will put up a good fight, so I’m calling a 2-2 draw with the 18-year-old Ivanovic to get on the scoresheet.
