Show Preview

The Newcastle Jets will look to turn around their stuttering start to the new A-League season in the toughest way possible as they host the league-leading Sydney FC in Round 4. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7:50pm (AEDT).

The Jets won’t be helped by the absence of Roy O’Donovan in this game, but they need to find a way to turn around their start.

In three games, they have looked a shell of the team who made it all the way to the grand final last year, only being able to register a single draw, leaving them stone-cold last on the ladder.

It’s early days in a long season, but it’s far from ideal and with their key man O’Donovan still on the sidelines for another fortnight, they can hardly afford another couple of losses in the next fortnight.

Realistically though, all they have working for them in this game is that they will have home-ground advantage, with names like captain Nigel Boogaard and Dimi Petratos needing to stand up if they are going to stand a chance.

Sydney FC, on the other hand, couldn’t have asked for much more to start their campaign and charge back to the top after being knocked out of the finals last season.

While their FFA Cup final loss in Adelaide wasn’t part of the plan set down, they have done everything else right, including bouncing back from that loss just three days later to register a result.

They hold two wins and a draw to start the season, and it leaves them equal at the top of the table with the Perth Glory, who have, so far, been this season’s surprise packet.

While Sydney have plenty of new faces running around this year, the side have gelled from the get-go, with the aptly named Adam Le Fondre leading the charge. He already has four goals to his name to lead the league and has hardly put a foot wrong in leading from the front for the men from the harbour city.

Prediction
It’s hard to see this going any other way than a blue runaway. Newcastle aren’t a terrible team despite what their record suggests, and they are tough to stop at home, but stop they will be here.

Newcastle Jets 0 – Sydney FC 2.
